In collaboration with the American Arts Center in Casablanca, Morocco, Galerie Kuchling presents the exhibition "From the Backyard to Beyond and Back." This exhibition, curated by Tatyana Palyga and Alexander Bondar from Zoopark Publishing and co-curated by Josephine Müller from Galerie Kuchling, is dedicated to exploring individual landscapes and both inner and outer journeys.
The works of the four photographers were initially published by Zoopark Publishing, an independent artist project founded by Tatyana Palyga and Alexander Bondar, in zine form. For Zoopark Publishing, zines represent more than just photo collections – they are a means of artistic self-empowerment, allowing photographers to share their stories directly and unaltered with the world, thanks to low production costs and maximum creative freedom. After presenting the zines at various European art and photo book fairs, the idea emerged to showcase the works in Berlin as a traveling exhibition.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover four unique geographies through four carefully designed zines and their artistic adaptation on the gallery walls. It serves as a visual discourse on belonging, the meaning of home, and the constant tension between self and the world – a journey that begins in the familiar, stretches to new horizons, and ultimately returns.
The photographs of these four artists open up a dialogue on memory, identity, and the human experience. Their works are deeply rooted in personal experiences and cultural contexts, offering a multifaceted view of the interplay between past and present. They uncover the beauty in the everyday, the resilience in overlooked spaces, and the fragility of life. The photographers take us on a journey through landscapes and moments that are both intimate and universal, inviting us to recognize the hidden stories and fragments that shape our understanding of home, memory, and change.
At the heart of the exhibition lies not just the documentation of life but rather the critical engagement with processes of change and memory. The photographs invite reflection on our relationships to space, time, and identity, highlighting how photography is used as a medium to preserve fleeting moments and make the unspoken visible. The exhibition addresses the interactions between past and present and the search for authenticity in a constantly changing world. It challenges us to reposition ourselves within this dynamic web of history and identity.
